Describing herself as an "unconventional educator," she began her career in education in 2004 after transitioning from the nonprofit sector, where a layoff unexpectedly led her to discover her passion for helping young people succeed. What started as a Project Assistant role evolved into a rewarding career in educational leadership, counseling, and student support. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Lincoln University and a Master of Education in School and Mental Health Counseling from the University of Pennsylvania, equipping her with the expertise to address the academic, emotional, and developmental needs of diverse student populations.

Currently serving as an Academic Advisor, College Counselor, and Title IX Coordinator at Freire Charter School, Barnes wears many hats in support of student success. Her work encompasses special education case management, college and career counseling, Title IX compliance, transition planning, and collaboration with educators, families, and community partners to ensure students receive equitable opportunities to thrive. Throughout her career, she has also held leadership roles in family and community engagement, health and nutrition programming, and youth development, where she designed and managed initiatives that strengthened organizational performance and improved outcomes for children and families. Known for her collaborative leadership style, she excels at building cross-functional partnerships, implementing strategic programs, and advocating for inclusive educational environments.

Barnes is deeply committed to advancing educational equity, particularly for students with special needs and those facing social or systemic barriers. She believes meaningful change begins with strong relationships, compassionate advocacy, and a willingness to meet students where they are. Beyond her professional responsibilities, she actively serves in community organizations focused on leadership, empowerment, and service, while remaining involved in her church and mentoring initiatives. Looking ahead, Barnes hopes to continue expanding her leadership in special education and student support services, helping shape programs that empower every student to reach their fullest potential. Her career reflects a steadfast commitment to service, resilience, and creating lasting, positive impacts within schools and the communities they serve.
