About Edwina
Edwina Horsechief serves as Program Director for the Tribal Opioids Response Program of the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes, based in Anadarko, Oklahoma. With 6 years of experience in the field and nearly 4 years in her current leadership role, she oversees a small team that includes a case manager and peer recovery outreach specialist while also providing direct services. Her work encompasses trauma-informed case management, recovery support, treatment referrals, prevention services, wraparound support, intake and assessments, crisis intervention, and coordination with courts, schools, law enforcement, hospitals, and other tribes across a 10-county service area. Edwina holds a high school diploma and brings 13 years of personal recovery from addiction and alcoholism, having overcome homelessness, incarceration, and street life. This lived experience fuels her commitment to advocacy, ensuring clients are treated with dignity and never turned away. She mentors approximately 4 to 5 individuals in recovery and emphasizes the importance of approaching the work with genuine heart and without judgment. Among the challenges she identifies is insufficient funding and resources, while she sees opportunity in growing collaboration among tribes and communities.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Just don't look down on nobody. You just gotta have a heart for this, and if you don't have a heart for it, then our people aren't gonna get nowhere.
02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Biggest challenge is lack of funding and resources. Opportunity is tribes and communities coming together to collaborate.
