Her Story

About Eileen

Eileen Alvarado is an Executive Assistant with Inova Health System, where she has built an impressive 30-year career, advancing from an administrative clerk to one of the highest administrative positions within the organization. She currently supports a Vice President in Research Operations, a role that has transformed over the years from traditional behind-the-scenes support into a genuine strategic partnership. Eileen now plays an active part in collaborative executive planning alongside department leadership, reflecting how far the modern executive assistant role has evolved within healthcare administration. Her academic foundation comes from Howard University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in Nutrition Sciences, initially launching her career in dietetics and nutritional sciences before transitioning into the administrative field where she has spent the majority of her professional life.

Eileen’s path to success was far from straightforward. As a single mother raising three children while working through a difficult marriage, she spent many years in what she describes as survival mode, focused simply on keeping things afloat for her family. What allowed her to stay the course and continue growing professionally was the flexibility and genuine support she received from understanding managers and team members throughout her tenure, support that gave her the stability to thrive even when stepping outside the organization wasn't an option. Roughly five years ago marked a turning point, as she began to feel a renewed sense of empowerment and personal healing. That shift opened the door to deeper involvement in voluntary community service work, ultimately leading to her recruitment as secretary, and later co-chair, of her organization's Team Member Resource Group for the InovAsians.

One of the most memorable chapters in Eileen’s career unfolded during the pandemic, when traditional employee milestone celebrations were paused. Rather than let her 25th work anniversary pass unrecognized, she took the initiative herself, requesting a meeting with the organization's President and CEO, Dr. J.Stephen Jones, presenting him with a heartfelt two-page letter chronicling her professional journey, and even bringing him flowers in a gesture reminiscent of a prom proposal. Touched by the moment, the CEO shared it on LinkedIn, and Eileen believes her gesture helped spark the organization's eventual return to honoring long-tenured employees, now celebrated with milestones such as complimentary tickets to the National game in Washington, D.C. In recognition of her remarkable journey and decades of dedication, Eileen was selected to be featured in Influential Women magazine's 2026 edition, representing Alexandria, Virginia and the DMV area.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Eileen

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to persistence and a willingness to build myself up from an entry-level role rather than expecting an easy path. The support of my family and several understanding, flexible supervisors made an enormous difference, especially during the years I was navigating single motherhood and personal hardships. A turning point for me was moving out of "survival mode" and into a place of empowerment once I began healing from personal challenges. Taking on volunteer opportunities within my organization also played a key role in helping me grow further.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I've ever received is to surround myself with a good support team made up of only positive people. The people you keep close, both personally and professionally, have a real impact on how far you can grow and how resilient you can be through challenges. I was also taught not to be intimidated by others and to always know my worth. Holding onto that mindset has helped me advocate for myself and stay grounded, even in moments when it would have been easy to doubt myself.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice is simple: be heard, and voice your opinion, because it matters. Don't be afraid to speak up, advocate for yourself, and let your perspective be known, even when it feels difficult to do so. I'd also encourage them to stay curious and keep learning, because the more you know, the more you grow. Investing in your own growth, both personally and professionally, is what allows you to keep evolving in this field and to eventually step into roles where you're not just supporting leadership, but partnering with it. Always continue to seek professional development opportunities, mentorship with your leaders for support and guidance and be always be adaptable to constant change.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenges I see are the structural changes our field has undergone post-pandemic, including the shift to remote and hybrid work along with ongoing leadership transitions that require us to continually adapt. At the same time, I see real opportunity in how the executive assistant role itself is evolving. It's no longer just behind-the-scenes support; it's becoming a true strategic partnership with leadership, and I think that shift opens doors for greater impact and recognition in our profession.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values I hold most important are support, both from family and from supervisors who lead with flexibility and understanding, along with resilience in the face of difficulty. I also deeply value partnership with leadership in how I approach my work, the sense of empowerment that comes from overcoming personal challenges, and meaningful acknowledgment and recognition of employees for their long-term dedication.
