About Elaine
Elaine McLain of Birmingham, Michigan, has dedicated more than two decades to public service in her hometown. After beginning her career as a psychiatric nurse working with children, adolescents, and those dealing with alcohol and substance abuse, she transitioned into business and advocacy roles, including medical-legal nursing evaluations. McLain volunteered for 16 years on the Birmingham Area Cable Board, serving as chairman for 15 of those years, before being elected as a city commissioner. She was chosen by her peers as mayor pro tem in 2022 and mayor in 2023. A lifelong resident who earned a degree from a local college, McLain is known for her commitment to transparency, ethical governance, and community leadership. She recently stepped back from elected office due to health reasons but has recovered and is now starting a consulting practice as a consumer advocate in automotive, healthcare, and economic opportunity matters.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Find a support group of women who have been where you are going. Read everything you can. Ask yourself why you want to do this - to be famous or to quietly make a difference. Be ethical and transparent. Network and connect with those who have been there. Set boundaries and make clear expectations.
