Her Story
About Elisha
Elisha Blair is the owner of Elisha's Furry Pet Shop, a pet grooming business located at 1562 Ivanhoe Road in Max Meadows, Virginia. With 15 years of experience in the pet grooming industry and 10 years running her own shop, she has built a reputation for taking on animals that many other groomers turn away, focusing her practice on aggressive dogs and large breeds. Clients have traveled as far as six hours to bring their pets to her, drawn by both her willingness to work with difficult cases and her commitment to keeping her prices steady and affordable for a decade and a half.
Before opening her own business, Blair worked as a vet tech at a local clinic, where she first recognized how few groomers in her area were equipped to handle challenging or larger dogs. That observation set her on the path toward formal training, which she pursued through an online program with Penn Foster Group over two years. She completed her education while working 12-hour shifts, raising two young children, including a newborn, and helping run a family farm, balancing all of it to build the skills that would eventually shape her own grooming practice.
Today, Blair continues to operate her shop with a focus on the community rather than expansion, offering services such as shaving, bathing, and nail trims by appointment only. She holds an Advanced Studies Diploma in Accounting and Business/Management from Fort Chiswell High School and remains grounded in the hands-on, service-first approach that has defined her career from the start. Rather than growing her business into something larger, she intends to keep welcoming new clients from her community and serving the animals other groomers are reluctant to take on.

Ten minutes with Elisha
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to noticing a real gap in my community — there simply weren't enough groomers in the area especially ones that work with aggressive or large dogs — and being willing to step into that gap. I built my business through hard work and persistence, completing my grooming education online over two years while working 12-hour shifts, raising two young children, including a newborn, and running a farm. I've also stayed committed to keeping my prices fair and consistent for 15 years, which has helped me build lasting trust with my clients.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Always give 100% in everything you do! Also if you can find a career in something you absolutely love and enjoy then do whatever it takes to make that happen!
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
When entering a career working with Animals always remember you are that animals voice, you always do what’s best for the animal no matter what!
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field is the shortage of groomers who are willing to take on aggressive or large dogs, which leaves many pet owners without options. I see that as an opportunity too — by specializing in the animals other groomers turn away, I've been able to serve clients who sometimes travel up to six hours just to reach my shop.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Accessibility and dedication matter most to me. I've kept my prices low and unchanged for 15 years because I want grooming services to remain within reach for my community. I also value showing up for animals and owners that others won't, and I plan to keep serving my community for as long as I can rather than focus on expanding. In my personal life I am focusing on my family, kids, my two new grandsons and the people that mean the most to me because that’s what I value the most. Really looking forward to starting this new chapter in my life with someone that has made me see what happiness truly is!
