Her Interview
Ten minutes with Eliza
01What do you attribute your success to?
It's that look in my daughter's eye when I go home after a long week of conferences where I had to work 12-14 hour days every day. When she sees me and she stayed up, and she sees what I'm doing and what I'm working towards, and when I take her to the facility and take her to an Athens Rock Lobsters hockey game and she says 'my mom works here' and I see how proud she is, that's the drive that creates the drive I have to want to succeed and grow and really make an example of myself for her and for other young women who are growing up and just trying to find their way.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Strength, courage, and confidence is gained by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. This quote from Eleanor Roosevelt has always stood out with me. I've really pushed myself over the last couple of years outside of my comfort zone. I am not an extrovert by any means, but standing up in front of people is a fear of mine. This past Super Regional for IAVM, I actually did one of the panels and I stood up in front of a giant class of people, and for me that was a giant fear of not being able to communicate properly. It just made me feel so much more confident and made me a better venue manager, feeling that I can actually go out and talk to people.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Do not give up. Just keep moving forward. I don't care what anybody says, you have to be strong, be brave, but number one, be humble. Just don't stop. Don't give up, keep moving forward.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
After COVID, events really dropped like a rock. Social events, whether entertainment, sporting events, or conferences, they really dropped and they've been struggling to come back. One of the things right now that's really big is still the hybrid event where it's partially online and in person, but that doesn't bring as many people. For a facility like where I work, the whole purpose of it is the economic impact that we bring to the city that we're in, creating those additional jobs at the restaurants and the boutiques and the hotels. If the numbers drop in the conventions and the people needing the events, it doesn't just affect us, it also affects the economy around us. But on the opportunity side, the sky's the limit. In this industry, if you can dream it, there is somebody in my industry that can execute it. It might not be at my property and I am okay with that because I'm gonna learn from what they do, but it is gonna be insane.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Teamwork, hands down, whether I'm at home or here, we all work as a team no matter what. At work, definitely servant leadership. I will never, ever, ever ask anyone else to do something that I am not willing to do myself. And hospitality, for me that is number one. I do it at home when I have time, I open my home, I always want to have people over, I want to host, I want to have people see people enjoy themselves, whether I'm at work or at home. Those are really the top 3.
