Her Story

About Elizabeth

I began my career in a nursing home in El Paso, Texas, after completing nursing school during high school. Although I explored several opportunities after graduation, many organizations were hesitant to hire someone so early in their career. Encouraged by classmates, I pursued a position at a facility where several of them had been hired and remained there for approximately three years. During that time, I developed a strong clinical foundation but sought greater responsibility and professional growth, which ultimately led me to explore leadership opportunities elsewhere. I applied for an Assistant Director of Nursing position at another facility with the goal of gaining interview experience; however, I was ultimately offered the role. Despite my initial surprise given my age, the position proved to be a pivotal step in my career. It allowed me to develop leadership skills, particularly in staff management and overseeing patient care operations. I was fortunate to work under a supportive Director of Nursing who provided valuable mentorship and guidance throughout my transition into leadership. Following this role, I pursued travel nursing to expand my experience, but I found the short-term nature of assignments did not align with my desire to build meaningful, lasting relationships with patients and ensure continuity of care. I later returned to El Paso after being recruited for another Assistant Director of Nursing position within a previous organization. While I valued aspects of that role, a lack of consistent leadership support limited my ability to succeed and grow in the position. I subsequently returned to travel nursing and accepted an assignment in Broomfield, Colorado, where I had long hoped to live and where I have family. During this assignment, I was encouraged to apply for a Unit Manager position. Based on my prior leadership experience, I was selected for the role, which I have now held for approximately three years. In my current position, I am proud to work alongside a highly collaborative and dedicated team, and I am grateful to be part of an environment that reflects strong teamwork and a shared commitment to quality patient care.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I believe my values and approach to my career are deeply rooted in the way I was raised. My parents instilled in me the importance of compassion, integrity, and helping others—principles that continue to guide me both personally and professionally. I strongly believe that leading with good intentions and a genuine commitment to others creates a foundation for meaningful success in any field. Additionally, I attribute much of my growth to the unwavering support and encouragement I have received from the women in my life. In particular, my current administrator has been a significant source of inspiration. Their investment in my development, along with their willingness to mentor and uplift me, has played an important role in shaping my career. I am sincerely grateful for their guidance and for the continued support I have received throughout my professional journey.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have received is to stay true to my values, lead with integrity, and never lose sight of the importance of compassion in patient care. I was encouraged to approach every situation with professionalism while also maintaining a genuine commitment to the well-being of those I care for. That perspective has helped guide my decisions and keep me grounded throughout my career. I have also learned the importance of surrounding myself with supportive and growth-oriented individuals who challenge and encourage me. Strong mentorship and a positive professional environment have reinforced that success is built through collaboration, continuous learning, and mutual support. Above all, I have come to value the reminder that genuinely caring for patients is at the heart of nursing and should remain the central focus in every role I take on.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would encourage others in this field to stay true to their purpose and pursue the path that feels most meaningful to them. Trust your instincts and remain committed to your goals, no matter how ambitious they may seem—what feels out of reach today can become achievable with persistence and dedication. Equally important is surrounding yourself with a strong, supportive community. Seek out mentors and colleagues who uplift, challenge, and inspire you, as their guidance and encouragement can make a meaningful difference in both your personal and professional growth.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the most significant challenges in my field is effectively managing and leading a diverse team. Each individual brings a unique personality, communication style, and set of motivations, which requires a thoughtful and adaptable leadership approach. In some situations, leading by example is the most effective way to demonstrate expectations and build trust, while in others, it is necessary to provide direct guidance, coaching, and structured feedback. Additionally, supporting team members’ growth requires recognizing that individuals respond differently to redirection and encouragement. Navigating these dynamics—and addressing conflicts when they arise—can be complex, but it also presents valuable opportunities for learning, strengthening team cohesion, and fostering professional development

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Loyalty and empathy are core values that guide both my professional and personal life. I believe in being supportive and understanding of others, recognizing that each individual brings unique experiences and perspectives. In my personal life, I prioritize being family-oriented, as those relationships provide a strong foundation and sense of purpose. Professionally, I place great importance on maintaining high standards of integrity, accountability, and consistency. Being genuine and committed to the work I do is essential, and I strive to approach every responsibility with honesty and dedication. I believe these values are fundamental to building trust, fostering strong relationships, and achieving meaningful success in any area of life
