Her Story

About Elizabeth

I have been doing advocacy work for over 10 years, going into households to support families dealing with loss from violence or missing girls. As a survivor of child molestation, my daughter and I write children's books about trauma. I hold an associates in human services and have 25+ years in corporate HR and human services. For the last 2 years I have been doing compliance audits at Advocate Health to ensure health needs are met and prevent Medicaid fraud, and I am transitioning to immigration compliance work.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Elizabeth

01What do you attribute your success to?

I will contribute my success to my daughter, because she every day see her wake up and just go hard every day. She was a 3 star high athlete, graduated with honors, been through the worst, and still waves today with a smile on her face.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

A professor told me that sometimes you have to do what you have to do to eventually do what you want to do. Stay true to the person that you are, and always represent your true self in any work that you do. Be grateful for the moment.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Never take anything personal. Somebody telling me what I couldn't do gave me the motivation to not only do what they said I couldn't do, but exceed that and do something greater.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

In Milwaukee, being the worst place to be black and raise a black child, voices are not heard, pain is downplayed. The challenge is staying consistent to make a difference so that when I'm no longer here the legacy continues for my daughter or grandson.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity and substance. Having integrity within yourself raises the standards for everybody you come in contact with. The ability to not take anything personal, and know that everybody is on this journey of life with the ability to change.
