About Elizabeth
I've been in publishing my whole career since getting out of college. I started as an editorial assistant at a computer magazine, worked at a reference publisher, and spent 5 years at Oxford University Press as managing editor on a major American dictionary edition. I wrote the U.S. President's Factbook published by Random House. Now semi-retired doing freelance editing and proofreading work.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Elizabeth
01What do you attribute your success to?
A combination of being well-educated and having a natural ability for the work. You have to notice details beyond just liking to read, know the rules and style, and maintain consistency throughout a project.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Be prepared to change with changing times because you don't know what's going to happen next. The industry has shifted dramatically with e-books and online databases replacing print.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
AI tools are changing the field significantly. Procrastination can be a personal challenge leading to late nights. Getting stuck on fiction writing and needing to push through revisions is difficult.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Honesty is the number one value. Doing the work I say I'm going to do and being clear with clients about what I do and don't do.
