Ten minutes with Elizabeth
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to resilience, discipline, faith, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to lifelong learning. From the age of six, I knew I was called to become a physician, and that sense of purpose has guided me throughout my journey, from completing medical school in the Caribbean and overcoming significant challenges to continuing my training in the United States. As a Family Medicine physician, I view medicine not simply as a profession but as a calling to serve others with excellence, dignity, and empathy. I am passionate about providing compassionate, patient-centered care, mentoring future physicians, and helping improve health outcomes in underserved communities. Above all, I strive to treat every patient with kindness and respect while building a legacy of service that extends beyond the walls of the clinic.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
One of the best pieces of career advice I ever received came through the example and encouragement of my family physician, who inspired me from an early age to pursue a career in medicine. That guidance taught me that purpose becomes powerful when it is supported by dedication, faith, and perseverance. It reinforced my belief that every meaningful journey begins with having the courage to pursue the dream placed in your heart and remaining committed to it through every challenge and opportunity.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering medicine is to seek out mentors who understand both your professional aspirations and your personal experiences. Take every opportunity to shadow experienced physicians, ask thoughtful questions, and build strong relationships with people who can guide and support you throughout your journey. Most importantly, believe in your abilities, trust the process, and never allow underrepresentation or obstacles to diminish your confidence, purpose, or potential. With perseverance, dedication, and a commitment to lifelong learning, you can make a meaningful impact in the lives of others and in the future of healthcare.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in medicine today is balancing the demands of clinical excellence, leadership, and personal responsibilities while continuing to address the underrepresentation of women in many areas of healthcare. I also believe it is essential to increase diversity within the medical profession so that patients can benefit from a broader range of perspectives and more culturally responsive care. At the same time, I see tremendous opportunities for women to shape the future of medicine through compassionate leadership, mentorship, advocacy, and community engagement. By encouraging and supporting more women from diverse backgrounds to pursue careers in healthcare, we can build a stronger, more inclusive system that is better equipped to serve the needs of every community.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Faith and family are the foundation of both my personal life and professional career. I am guided by compassion, kindness, humility, and a commitment to service, believing that healthcare extends beyond treating illness to caring for the whole person with dignity, respect, and empathy. This commitment is reflected in my community outreach efforts, including annual health and wellness events where I partner with healthcare organizations to provide free screenings, health education, and preventive care resources to families in the community.
As one of the few African American physicians in my practice, I deeply value representation, mentorship, and creating opportunities for others to succeed. I am passionate about supporting international medical graduates and encouraging the next generation of physicians to pursue their goals with confidence and determination. Above all, I believe that perseverance, faith, and excellence can overcome barriers, and that the greatest impact comes from serving others, uplifting those around us, and making a meaningful difference in the lives of the patients and communities entrusted to our care.
