Her Story
About Elle
Elle Hendey owns Hendey and Echelon LLC, where she focuses on pool decking, resurfacing, and crack cement repair using rubber stone materials. After pivoting from a career in the water industry and prior work as an interior designer, she is rebuilding her client base and establishing new footing in this field. Hendey, a sole provider for her two sons, draws on her street smarts and common sense in place of formal college education. She attributes her professional success to a combination of resiliency and a relentless mindset, interpreting rejection as a signal to provide more information rather than a final answer. Integrity remains her core value, one she refuses to compromise. Among the career advice she values most is not fearing large dollar amounts in negotiations, and she encourages young women entering the industry to compete only with themselves, aiming to improve year over year without wasting time on unproductive relationships.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Elle
01What do you attribute your success to?
My resiliency in combination with being relentless and not being afraid of hearing a no. When I hear no, I hear try again. It just means that I haven't answered enough questions or given them enough information.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Don't be afraid of the dollar amount. Just because it's a number that scares you, doesn't mean it's a number that scares them.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Just be in competition with yourself, not with anyone around you. You should always want to do better than what you did the previous year. And don't waste your pretty years on the trash.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Biggest challenge is rebuilding after pivoting industries, getting reestablished and getting footing again after letting go of client base from previous career.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity is so important, unwaveringly important to me. I will not diminish it for anyone.
