Her Interview
Ten minutes with Ellen
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my unwavering work ethic and perseverance to get the job done, no matter what. It's that quality where it's 1:30 in the morning and you're not done processing a payroll yet, and you're not going to stop until it's done. That's really what got me to where I am. That's probably my best quality, at least to my employer, not necessarily my family. I also think getting my CPP certification was crucial because when I got involved with the American Payroll Association, they promoted that, and it pretty much covered me for not having my bachelor's degree. Without that certification, I don't think I would have gotten as far as I did.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
I actually never had a mentor, and I wish I did. I can't say that I ever received any real career advice. Everything was done basically trial by error. The closest thing to career advice I got was getting my CPP certification. When I got involved with the American Payroll Association, they obviously promoted that, and it pretty much covered me for not having my bachelor's degree. I'm going to say that because without that certification, I don't think I would have gotten as far as I did.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
In my work, I value teaching, mentoring, and guiding others. I have a lot of knowledge to share, which is why I co-facilitate certification classes and plan to continue teaching when I retire. Personally, hanging out with my family is at the top of my list. I love playing games with them, whether it's cards or board games or whatever. Nothing is more important to me than being with my family and enjoying the day together. I also enjoy swimming, riding my bike with my husband, and watching movies.
