Her Story

About Ellen

Ellen Fichtelman has dedicated her entire legal career to the Jonas Law Firm PLLC, where she now serves as partner and part owner. After graduating from Stetson University College of Law in 2015, she joined the firm as her first job out of law school and has been there for over 10 years. Ellen's practice focuses on property law and trust and estate planning, areas where she sees significant opportunity with the growing population entering the age bracket where planning is needed. Her journey into law began unexpectedly in middle school when a mock trial in a political science class sparked her interest in the legal field, though ironically, her current practice keeps her out of the courtroom entirely. Throughout her career, Ellen has benefited from strong mentorship, particularly from her previous law partner Robert J. Brown, with whom she worked for most of her 10 years in practice. She credits her success to her robust support system, including her supportive husband and family, which enables her to balance the demands of running a practice and working full-time while raising small children. Ellen is an active member of the Denver and Lake Norman communities. She is Past-President of the Denver/Lake Norman Rotary Club (2021-2022). Previously she served as the Rotary Club’s Public Image Chair (2018-2021) and on the Club’s Denver Days Board (2018-2021). She also served as the President of the Lake Norman Young Alumni Chapter for Davidson College (2019- 2021). Ellen has been a member of the North Carolina Bar and Lincoln County Bar since 2015 and previously served as Vice President of the Lincoln County Bar (2016 – 2017). Ellen currently serves on the Lincoln Charter School Board.

Ten minutes with Ellen

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would attribute my success to my support system. I have a very supportive family and a supportive husband. I don't think I could do my job and have the career I have if I didn't have the support system that I have. Balancing the demands of being a partner and part owner of a law firm while raising small children is incredibly challenging, and having people who believe in me and support me both professionally and personally has been essential to everything I've accomplished.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Intern and talk with other female lawyers. Make sure it's something you want to do before you make the commitment, because it is a big commitment. If you do decide to enter the practice of law, don't feel pigeonholed to one practice area, because if you start and you're not happy with what you're doing, there's so many different areas of law. You can always try something new with your license. Don't throw in the towel. The legal field offers tremendous variety, and if one area isn't working for you, you have the flexibility to explore other options without starting over.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest opportunity in my field is the need for estate planning. There is a large population of people who entering the age group where planning is needed. My biggest challenge is personal: raising a family and having small kids is hard to do while you also run a practice and work full-time. The professional opportunities in my field are strong, but the personal challenges of balancing a demanding legal career with family life are very real.
