Her Interview
Ten minutes with Ellen
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the strong foundation of organizational support I have received throughout my career. From the moment I joined Still Hopes as a transplant to the Columbia area, my organization consistently invested in my growth—encouraging me to pursue leadership development, supporting my return to graduate school, and providing opportunities at every stage. That belief in my potential has been the most important driver of my professional growth.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The most valuable career guidance I’ve received is the importance of actively finding a mentor outside of my direct reporting structure. Having someone in my corner who understands my goals and can advocate for me has shown me the importance of being open, honest, and intentional about what I want from my career.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would encourage young women to seek out mentors early and communicate their goals clearly and confidently. Keeping ambitions to yourself limits opportunities, while sharing them allows others to support and advocate for your growth. Being proactive about building relationships and asking for guidance can significantly accelerate career development.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in aging services is overcoming outdated public perceptions of senior living and addressing societal ageism. These misconceptions not only affect public understanding and the available talent pool but also influence how older adults view their own aging journey. The greatest opportunity lies in reshaping this narrative—positioning aging as a stage of continued purpose, vitality, and growth through intentional communication and education.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Belonging and personal fulfillment are the core values that guide my work and life. I prioritize creating environments where people feel included, valued, and able to contribute meaningfully. At the same time, I seek fulfillment in the work I do, as it sustains my motivation and helps maintain balance. When individuals feel a true sense of purpose, both they and the organization thrive.
