Her Story

About Emily

I went to Melbourne High School where I earned an associate's degree through AP classes, then received my certificate in paralegal studies from Eastern Florida State College, becoming a certified paralegal. While in college at age 18, I got my license to sell whole life insurance and worked as a life insurance saleswoman. I am most proud of being made head paralegal at Mr. Newcomb's firm fresh out of school, where I handled everything and got the firm back on track, and becoming a notary public. I currently work in corporate litigation at Wright, Lindsay & Jennings with attorney Judy.

Ten minutes with Emily

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would attribute my success to the hard work instilled in me by my mother and the great support system that I have. I've always had that drive, because I've never been told that I can't do anything.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Don't take anything personally. Because there are a lot of hard cases, there are a lot of hard clients, and you are going to be told a lot as a paralegal. Just don't take it personally.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Never settle. Just know your worth, you know your intelligence, and you know what you are capable of. Don't ever let an attorney lowball you, especially if you have your degree, or you have years of experience. Just keep pushing until you find the firm that values you the way you deserve to be valued.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Challenges in my field. You know, obviously trying to make sure everything is handled in a good manner, in a timely manner. Make sure the client is taken care of, as well as the attorneys you work for. Just, that's basically it, it's just making sure no deadlines are missed, and that the case runs smoothly. AI is hindering because it cites cases that aren't even real.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty and hard work. Those are the two most important values. Loyalty is there, but in order for you to be loyal to someone, they've got to be loyal to you, too.
