Her Story

About Emily

I graduated from Brandeis University with a bachelor's degree in Communications and Media Studies, and I was the first person in my family to graduate college, which was a really big generational change that was important to me personally. I went to an inner-city public school growing up, and then ended up going into a very tiny charter school with only 50 students in my graduating high school class. During college, I studied abroad in Spain, which was probably the most life-changing experience I've had so far. I lived with a host family who only spoke Spanish, no English, so I was able to learn Spanish really quickly because I had to. That experience gave me so much perspective and empathy for anyone struggling with English, because I finally understood what it's like when you come into somewhere and you don't speak the language. After graduation, I started working full-time at HarbourVest Partners, where I had interned the summer of 2024. I'm currently a marketing analyst doing project management, keeping the marketing department organized with campaigns, strategies, and workflows. I've been recognized by some of my superiors and have been able to be a driver of change within the firm as we adopt new technologies. I'm also one of the leaders in our women's network, where I organize events like speed networking and mentor circles for different senior leaders to talk to junior-level people.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would tell them to just apply to everything and be open to everything, because you really don't know where it might take you or what comes with it. You might really enjoy something, you might really enjoy financial services, or you might go into it and hate it, or you can try something else. At some point, even if you're not doing exactly what you want, it'll give you some sort of experience to pivot you in the direction to do what you want to do eventually. So I would just say keep your options open and just say yes to everything that's coming, because it's the only time that you're probably going to have little to no responsibilities outside of yourself, so just take advantage of that.
