Her Story
About Emily
I graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center with my Bachelor's in Nursing in May 2017, and bedside nursing was really my true passion - my calling to nurture and take care of others in their time of need. I worked as a bedside nurse for the first several years of my career, and when COVID came around, I started doing some travel nursing contracts. In the spring of 2022, I got in a pretty bad car accident and hurt my back and had a head injury, and it really took a toll on me. I tried to go back to bedside nursing after I had recovered, but it was just too hard. After I stopped doing travel nursing, I tried to make money to pay my medical bills by driving from Omaha to Kansas City at like 3 AM to start my 6:30am shift for 3-4 12-hour shifts in a row, then driving back after my last shift and getting home at like 11 PM. It was just a lot on my body. I was looking for a staff job locally and got hired somewhere, but on my very first day of orientation, they let me know they had to take back their job offer because they found out about my back injury from my pre-employment physical - I guess they saw me as kind of a liability, even though I knew I was up for the job. That was really disappointing, but long story short, it led me to my current role at PromptCare as an Account Executive, which isn't necessarily patient care anymore, but I really enjoy it because it helps me to advocate for patients in a different aspect. I've been with PromptCare a little over a year now, and while it wasn't what I ever planned on doing when I became a nurse, my past led me here, and now I'm really glad that everything happened for a reason.

Ten minutes with Emily
01What do you attribute your success to?
I would say my mom- she just really ingrained a hard work ethic and a caring attitude in me from an early age. She’s the kindest, most selfless human I know. She's the one who shaped who I am and gave me the foundation to succeed in my career.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've received is to put yourself out there and be kind to everyone, because people really remember how you treated them. To sum that all up, don't burn bridges. Being kind and maintaining good relationships with everyone you work with is something that has really stuck with me throughout my career.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would say network with everyone you can, and don't think that you're above anything. I've found that a lot of new nurses are like, I only want to do ICU, or I only want to do labor and delivery, and it's like, I probably grew the most from those less ideal jobs that weren't as glamorous. Doing the floor jobs that are really, really hard and aren't as nice - I would say try as much as you can. Don't limit yourself to only the prestigious positions, because those challenging, unglamorous jobs are often where you'll learn and grow the most.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
For challenges, I would say barriers that are out of my control - there's a lot of politics in healthcare. In my role, I can't sometimes reach certain people because there's contracts in place, even though I think a patient should get the choice. I would also say just overcoming personal fears, because technically I'm in somewhat of a sales role, and it's really hard and intimidating to go out to people, especially people that don't want to speak to you, and step outside my comfort zone and let them know that we have something we can offer that can help patients. As far as opportunities, I would say just growth opportunities, obviously, but with nursing, after you get experience as a nurse, it's very versatile. You can do a lot of different things, so opportunities are endless in a way.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are faith, which is huge for me, integrity, inclusion - that's always been my principle to include everyone, accountability, respect, humility, and compassion. I actually just recently had to write these down for a journaling thing, and while I could list off a million things, these are the core values that guide both my work and personal life.
