Her Story
About Emily
I've been in marketing and communications for over 7 years now. Right out of college, I started my own consultancy and ran a team of over 4 freelancers, working with clients across all kinds of industries - from construction and manufacturing to IT, interior design, and business consulting. I really loved the entrepreneurial aspect of it and learning about different types of businesses. Currently, I'm the Associate Director of Communications and Marketing at Garrison Forest School (NACE), where we have a lean team that handles pretty much everything in-house. My day-to-day can range from brand strategy to vendor management to all aspects of the marketing function across social, digital, print, and editorial, with a lot of cross-functional collaboration across teams. On the side, I founded and manage Things to Do in Baltimore, a lifestyle travel brand that I started on Instagram and TikTok. It's gained some good traction with over 18,000 followers across both platforms, and I've been able to navigate some wonderful brand partnerships with companies like Warby Parker, Google, and K-Pot. I'm currently in the middle of a job search as I'm relocating to Louisiana, but I'm excited about what's next and continuing to build my personal brand.

Ten minutes with Emily
01What do you attribute your success to?
I think the wonderful mentors that I've had throughout my career thus far have been absolutely crucial to my success. My work ethic has also played a major role. Beyond that, I'd say my ability and willingness to be open to building relationships - meeting people where they are - has really helped me be successful. All three of those things in combination have been able to help me get to where I am today.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've ever received is that relationships are the most crucial part of building your professional career, both from a marketing standpoint and from a day-to-day perspective. Building and maintaining strong professional relationships has been fundamental to everything I've accomplished.
