Her Story

About Emily

Emily Lewis serves as the interim safety officer for the City of North Charleston, where her primary focus is ensuring the safety of city employees so they return home safely to their families each day. She conducts audits and inspections, engages directly with staff, and organizes initiatives such as OSHA Safety Week to promote awareness. With a background that includes claims management at Unum in Maine and risk analysis for the Department of Defense, Lewis advanced from analyst to director of risk management at Academy, building teams of safety officers and risk analysts. She earned a bachelor's degree in risk management from Grand Canyon University and maintains certifications in OSHA 30, HAZWOPER, HAZCOM, ADA, oil safety, EPA safety, and ladder safety. Lewis is a National Collegiate Scholar, a member of a legal fraternity honor society and Sigma Iota Gamma, and plans to begin a master's program in risk and safety at Boston University in June 2027. She attributes her success to asking questions, getting involved, standing up for her beliefs, and prioritizing the well-being of her colleagues.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Emily

01What do you attribute your success to?

Not being afraid to ask the questions, not being afraid to get dirty, not being afraid to stand up for what you believe in. The people I work with are my priority, ensuring they are safe and go home at night.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Stay focused. This industry is very competitive and primarily male-dominated. Go for it. Remember it was started by a woman in New York City after the factory fire tragedy in 1911. We started this, it's ours.
