About Emily
Emily O'Donnell serves as VP of Product and Communications at Evolution Digital, a company based in Centennial, Colorado, where she has worked for 11 years. She earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan in 2014 and entered the technology industry shortly thereafter, initially spending two years in product-focused public relations at Dish Network. At Evolution Digital, she began in PR and content marketing before identifying a need for stronger product leadership and transitioning into product development and management, eventually rising through manager, senior manager, director, and VP roles. Her responsibilities center on product roadmap development, requirements, user experience design, and marketing materials, with communications now comprising a small portion of her work. O'Donnell is an active member of Women in Cable Technology (WICT) and contributes her time to philanthropic efforts with Habitat for Humanity and Susan G. Komen. She attributes her professional growth to the supportive environment at her company, a strong work ethic, collaboration with teams, and early experiences such as her internship in the press office for Kamala Harris and her role as a sports writer at the University of Michigan.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Emily
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to being at Evolution Digital, a small private company with a family feel that values me, combined with putting in the work ethic like getting up at 4am and working with Asia, going above and beyond, having autonomy, collaborating with teams, and finding an organization where you love the people and manager. Also building my resume with internships like press office intern for Kamala Harris and sports writer for University of Michigan.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My biggest advice would be to network as much as you can, learn as much as you can, raise your hand, be reliable, communicate well, build your LinkedIn, do the grunt work, earn your stripes, find a niche you love, and don't assume you'll be director or VP right out of college. It's never too late to make a change if something doesn't excite you.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenges are memory shortages and high costs due to AI demand affecting everyday devices like routers and set-top boxes, making devices more expensive. Opportunities include unifying fragmented app experiences into one seamless platform using APIs, utilizing AI for proactive problem-solving like outage alerts, and providing innovative services like presence detection.
