About Emily
My journey to the flooring industry was quite unexpected. Right out of high school, I worked at Parts Express International for about 14 years, starting in customer service. I'm just that person who always wants to know more - I'm very curious because I want to understand how everything works. I ended up running their speaker repair shop, re-coning and re-foaming speakers, working on crossover boards and amplifiers. We even did work for Nikki Sixx, the lead singer of Motley Crue, which was insane. After my longtime boss Dan Brownfield left, I decided to venture back into the nursing area and started working at Dayton Children's Hospital, getting into a program for nursing. Then right in the thick of COVID, Dan called me up and said he had the best job for me and here I am. I knew nothing about flooring when I started, but with my mindset of wanting to know more, now I can install showers and lay flooring. Today, as Executive South Central Sales Manager at Better Tools-Bihui, I sell all the tools needed for flooring installation and provide product support in the field. I work with everything from carpet, LVT, and tile, specializing in large 5 foot by 10 foot panels. I'm heavily involved with testing and quality, and support! I've been featured in Floor Covering Installation Magazine doing product demonstrations at major trade shows. My heart's in this work - I've had job offers from competitor tool companies offering more money, but it's not always about the money. If your heart's not in it, you're not gonna do the best at what you do.

Ten minutes with Emily
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my insatiable curiosity and desire to always learn more. I am just that person who wants to know more, wants to know more, wants to know more - I'm always very curious because I want to understand how everything works. This mindset has allowed me to excel in completely different fields, from running a speaker repair shop to now being able to install showers and lay flooring, even though I knew nothing about flooring when I started. I also believe that having your heart in your work is essential. I've had job offers from competitor tool companies offering more money, but it's not always about the money. If your heart's not in it, you're not gonna do the best at what you do. I'm fortunate to have a great team and support system around me - in the flooring industry, it's like a family. I can go to any state in the country, even over in Shanghai, and there are people I could call who would come running to my rescue.
02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The most important value to me is continuous learning and staying curious. I always try to teach my four kids that you don't know everything, and the moment that you think you know everything, you can't learn anything - that's a great value that I instill in them. I also believe strongly in following your passion and having your heart in your work, not just chasing money. It's not always about the money - if your heart's not in it, you're not gonna do the best at what you do. I value being part of a supportive community that feels like family, where people come running to help each other. In my philanthropic work, I'm proud to support organizations like Booze and Boobies that help women in construction with breast cancer by applying money directly to bills and supplies rather than giving it to large organizations where you don't know where it goes.
