Her Story

About Emily

Emily Stokes is an editor with about 10 years of experience in the editorial industry. A lifelong equestrian, she began her career while attending Mount Holyoke College, where she interned at Equestrian Living Magazine and later joined American Horse Publications, earning their 2018 student award winner title. After roles at the Hartford Symphony Orchestra and earning a master's degree in publishing and writing from Emerson College starting in 2020, she joined Chewy as an assistant editor. She has since been promoted to editor, leading the development of equine content for PetMD and Chewy Education, and now extends her work to SmartPak Equine. Stokes attributes her success to a strong work ethic developed through early experiences mucking stalls in exchange for riding lessons, and a commitment to never giving up. She remains actively involved in the equestrian community.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Emily

01What do you attribute your success to?

My parents always told me growing up, you can have everything you want in life, just not all at the same time. I've really lived by that. Never giving up, and don't be afraid to put in the work. Work ethic was really ingrained in me pretty young. Dreams can come true as long as you're ready to work for them.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't be afraid to ask. You don't know if you don't ask, and to put yourself out there is super important. It's not gonna come to you. You have to go out and get it. Making a space for yourself is key, as well as staying true to your core beliefs.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Being the only equestrian on the editorial team, advocating for horses and equestrian sport in a way no other editor can. Being the voice for equestrians.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Family is important—to have a support system and a soft place to land when things go awry. Tenacity, unwilling to give up especially in the face of uncertainty. Not being afraid to learn as you go.
