Her Story

About Emily

Emily Uhlman serves as an adjunct professor in higher education and is preparing to begin a PhD program in English literature at a university in Tucson, Arizona, where she will also work as a graduate teaching assistant. Her academic background includes a bachelor's degree and a master's degree, both in English literature. During her graduate studies, Uhlman discovered a strong interest in border studies, which led her to pursue an interdisciplinary PhD focus in that area. After completing her master's, she transitioned directly into adjunct teaching roles, taking on a significant workload in her first semester. Prior to her move to Arizona, Uhlman worked as managing editor for a literary and arts social justice magazine centered on incarceration, featuring contributions from formerly or currently incarcerated authors. She has expressed enthusiasm for continuing her professional growth through her doctoral studies and potential new community involvements in Tucson.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Confidence gets you farther than you would think. Believing in yourself and using positive affirmations helped overcome imposter syndrome when starting as an adjunct professor despite not having an education track background. My therapist reminded me that my education and experiences qualify me for the role.
