Her Story

About Emma

My journey into the construction industry began at a young age. I grew up working alongside my dad, who is a general contractor specializing in residential construction. Throughout my childhood, I spent nights and weekends helping on job sites, and by the time I reached high school, I was working with him full-time during the summers. Those experiences gave me an early appreciation for the industry and helped shape my work ethic.

Although I initially thought I would pursue a career in real estate, I ultimately found my passion in construction. In 2023, I joined BCI as a Project Coordinator, and have since advanced to an Associate Project Manager. I have now been in that role for a little over a year. Currently, I manage approximately 10 projects at a time. My day-to-day responsibilities vary, but during the busy summer construction season, much of my time is spent on-site coordinating projects, meeting with owners and stakeholders, and managing schedules to keep projects moving forward efficiently.

One of my proudest professional accomplishments has been taking over responsibility for several medical projects within the company. Being entrusted with these projects represented a significant milestone in my career and demonstrated the confidence my organization has in my abilities. Another major achievement was earning my Master of Business Administration degree this past May, a goal that required significant dedication and perseverance.

In addition to my professional responsibilities, I have begun doing things with the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) and have also begun training with ASHE. These experiences have allowed me to expand my network, continue learning, and contribute to organizations that align with my professional interests and values.

Looking ahead, my goal is to maintain a healthy balance between my career and personal life. I want to continue doing work that challenges and inspires me while ensuring that I never lose the enjoyment I find in it. I am committed to continuous learning, taking on new opportunities, and growing professionally, but I also believe it is important to enjoy the journey and find fulfillment in the work I do every day.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would attribute much of my success to my parents and the values they instilled in me from an early age. My dad has always been my biggest supporter and is the one person who has never questioned my ability to accomplish something, regardless of the circumstances or who else may have doubted me. His unwavering confidence in me has had a tremendous impact on my self-belief and willingness to take on challenges.

My mom has also been a major influence in my life. She is highly educated and has always encouraged me to push beyond traditional expectations, strive for excellence, and continue growing both personally and professionally. She taught me that I am capable of achieving anything I set my mind to if I am willing to put in the effort and remain determined.

Together, my parents provided a foundation of encouragement, confidence, and resilience that has shaped who I am today. Their support and belief in me have been instrumental in helping me pursue opportunities, overcome obstacles, and achieve the success I have experienced throughout my career and life.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have received is to remember that we have earned our place and deserve to be where we are. That advice has stayed with me throughout my career, especially when working in a male-dominated industry.

I encourage others to embrace that mindset, even when it feels like an uphill battle. There may be times when we have to work harder to establish credibility or prove ourselves, but that should never make us question our value or abilities. Confidence comes from recognizing the hard work, knowledge, and dedication that brought us to our position.

It is important to continue advocating for ourselves, speaking up, and trusting our expertise. While challenges will always exist, we should not be afraid to stand our ground and demonstrate what we bring to the table. We have earned the opportunity to be here, and we deserve the same respect and recognition as anyone else in the room.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

If I could offer advice to other women considering a career in this field, it would be simple: go for it. Like many traditionally male-dominated industries, there can be challenges and preconceived notions about women working in these roles. I have experienced situations where I walk into a room and people automatically direct questions to the man standing next to me, even when I am the person responsible for providing the answers. Despite these challenges, it is important to remember that we have earned our place at the table. We belong in these positions just as much as anyone else, and we should be confident in the knowledge, skills, and experience that brought us here. There may be times when we have to work harder to establish credibility or prove ourselves, but that should never discourage us from pursuing our goals. I encourage women entering this field to be confident, speak up, and advocate for themselves. Do not be afraid to demonstrate your expertise and take ownership of your accomplishments. While the path may not always be easy, continuing to show up, contribute, and lead helps create opportunities for future generations of women. Most importantly, remember that you deserve to be here and have earned every opportunity just like everyone else.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The economy has experienced significant fluctuations in recent years, creating challenges in managing workloads and planning effectively. Navigating these changes has required adaptability and flexibility, and I have learned that the ability to evolve alongside economic and societal shifts is an essential skill. While it has been a learning experience so far, I expect that adapting to changing market conditions will remain an ongoing part of any professional career.

Another challenge that has become increasingly apparent is the shortage of professionals entering management roles within the industry. There is a particular need for more women in leadership positions, although the shortage extends to both men and women. As organizations work to develop future leaders, attracting and retaining talented individuals will continue to be a critical issue. In addition to economic and workforce challenges, working as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field presents unique obstacles. When I visit job sites with site leaders, who are all men within my organization, I have often noticed that people direct questions and concerns to them first rather than to me. While this can be frustrating, it has also been a valuable learning experience. Fortunately, my colleagues have been highly supportive and frequently redirect conversations back to me when appropriate, reinforcing my role and expertise. These experiences have strengthened my confidence, resilience, and ability to establish credibility in professional settings.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Finding a healthy balance between my career and personal life is very important to me. I want to continue doing work that I find meaningful and enjoyable, so that it never feels like a chore. I am committed to lifelong learning and enjoy challenging myself with new opportunities, but I also believe it is important to maintain a sense of fulfillment and enjoyment in the process. Outside of my professional life, I stay active and involved in a variety of activities. I coach volleyball in the spring, which allows me to share my passion for sports while helping others develop their skills and confidence. I also enjoy participating in unique races and events, including canoe races, triathlons, mud runs, and bike tours. Last year, I completed a 50-mile bike tour, and I am always looking for new adventures and experiences.
