Her Story

About Emma

Emma Boss serves as Global Communications Manager at Amcor, based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. With more than eight years in corporate communications, she began her professional journey after switching her college focus from news reporting to human resources. She secured an internal communications internship at La-Z-Boy Incorporated, where she developed the company's first intranet, and was offered a full-time position upon completion. Shortly after, she became the sole member of the communications department, leading efforts during a CEO retirement transition and the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, Emma joined Amcor, initially supporting a business group. Following a significant merger that positioned Amcor as the world's largest packaging company, she advanced to her current global role, managing communications for one of the company's global functions. In this capacity, she supports the division president and leadership team with executive communications, has created an intranet for her business group, and leads harmonization projects including digital signage and site communications networks. Emma attributes her career progression to networking and relationship-building, notably through a mentor arranged by her CHRO at La-Z-Boy who facilitated her move to Amcor. She values the opportunity to work on a global scale and aspires to lead teams again while maintaining strong work-life balance as a new mother.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Emma

01What do you attribute your success to?

Networking and building relationships have been key to my success. Since I was the only person on the internal communications team at La-Z-Boy, my CHRO set me up with a mentor who helped me grow and even moved me to Amcor. I believe that in today's job market, it's really about who you know and the relationships you've built rather than just applying online. My career moves have happened because of people I've worked with who want to work with me again.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't give up because it's going to be hard and very intimidating at first. Have confidence in who you are and what you know. Age is just a number - it's not your age in the room, it's how you portray yourself and your confidence. Continue to be a trusted advisor, build relationships, and people will trust you and want to work with you no matter your age or experience level.
