Her Interview
Ten minutes with Emma
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my upbringing as a first-generation Hispanic woman, the support of my family, and the strong emphasis they placed on education. Those values continue to guide me in teaching, counseling, and supporting students, individuals, and families. For me, success is ultimately about service and making a positive difference in the lives of others.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve received is to continue pursuing my dreams and never limit what I can accomplish. I believe in staying motivated, seeking support and guidance when needed, and continuing to grow. No matter your age or accomplishments, there is always room to pursue new goals and dreams.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering my industry is to remember that you don’t always have to start over—you’re often building on the experiences that are shaping who you’re becoming. Every degree, job, and life experience can prepare you for opportunities you may not see yet. Keep learning, build on what you’ve already accomplished, and trust the journey toward who you want to become.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I think one of the biggest challenges was for me to go from education into opening a practice, the business aspect of it has been challenging. And I think just stepping into a new position away from what was familiar to me was a challenge, and how to go about starting a business, how to go about getting the licenses, the state requirements, and so forth.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values I prioritize most are mutual respect, open communication, honesty, self-compassion, and self-care. I believe respectful and honest communication is essential in every relationship, both personally and professionally. I also value being compassionate toward myself and others while maintaining a healthy focus on self-care.
