Her Story

About Emma

Emma Rouhana, MBA, SPHR, brings nearly two decades of progressive human resources and People & Culture leadership experience across construction, manufacturing, transportation, and private equity-backed organizations. She currently serves as Director of People & Culture at Suffolk Construction, where she leads HR initiatives across the South Florida region. Her career began in labor and employment as a legal assistant before transitioning into HR operations, where she developed expertise in compliance, onboarding, process standardization, and employee support. She later advanced into director-level leadership with the Jacksonville Transportation Authority and built HR functions from the ground up for both a private equity-backed landscape company and a manufacturing organization with multiple facilities across the United States and Mexico.

At Suffolk Construction, Rouhana takes a hands-on, people-centered approach to leadership, regularly visiting job sites to partner with leadership teams, strengthen employee engagement and retention, and support the organization’s workforce strategy. She also contributes to brand visibility through community philanthropy and works to develop veteran recruiting pipelines that expand opportunities for experienced professionals. Her broader expertise encompasses organizational culture, talent development, succession planning, change management, employee relations, compliance, and workforce strategy. She earned her B.A. in Organizational Management from Albizu University – Miami Campus and her M.B.A. from Nova Southeastern University’s Wayne Huizenga School of Business.

Rouhana holds the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) credential through HRCI and a Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt, and she is pursuing additional SHRM and AI-related credentials. She is an active member of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and supports philanthropic initiatives through Suffolk Construction, including employee hardship assistance, partnerships with Make-A-Wish and United Way, and Team Suffolk volunteer opportunities. Her commitment to people, community, and organizational development has been recognized through professional honors, including being named one of the Influential Women in 2023.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Emma

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the experiences and lessons I have gained throughout my nearly 20-year career in human resources, from beginning as a legal assistant to building and leading HR functions for organizations across transportation, manufacturing, landscaping, and construction. Each role has strengthened my ability to develop people strategies, navigate change, and build strong organizational cultures. Today, as Director of People & Culture at Suffolk Construction, I am especially passionate about being a hands-on leader who visits job sites, works directly with leadership teams, and focuses on employee engagement, retention, and creating a consistent employee experience across locations. I believe my success comes from staying connected to people, continuously learning, and using my experience to create meaningful solutions that support both employees and the organization. Looking ahead, I am focused on strengthening our brand, expanding philanthropy and veteran recruiting initiatives, and building on the momentum we have created in employee retention.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have received is to never stop learning and to remain adaptable as the industry evolves. I believe continuous professional development, including pursuing certifications such as SHRM and emerging AI credentials, is essential to staying current, relevant, and prepared for the future of the profession. I have also learned the importance of surrounding yourself with supportive colleagues and employees who encourage you through challenging moments and remind you of the value of teamwork. Giving back has been equally important to me, and my involvement in company philanthropy, including initiatives that provide financial hardship assistance and partnerships with organizations such as Make-A-Wish and United Way, has reinforced the importance of using my professional role to make a meaningful difference in the community.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the human resources field is to stay committed to continuous learning, remain current with industry trends and emerging technologies, and never underestimate the value of hard work. Build your knowledge, pursue opportunities for professional development, and be willing to take on challenges that expand your experience. Success takes time, but consistent effort, dedication, and a willingness to keep growing will create opportunities and help you build a rewarding career.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the greatest opportunities in my field right now is the ability to build on the foundation I have established during my two years with Suffolk Construction. This experience has allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the construction industry while strengthening partnerships with leaders and employees across the South Florida region. I see significant opportunities to further enhance employee engagement and retention, develop talent, strengthen veteran recruiting initiatives, and create a consistent employee experience across locations. I am also focused on advancing people strategies that support organizational growth, strengthen company culture, and position the workforce for long-term success.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me in both my professional and personal life are integrity, continuous growth, service, and the desire to make a meaningful impact on others. Throughout my more than 20-year career, I have learned that success is not only measured by accomplishments, but also by the lasting contributions we make and the people we inspire along the way. I am proud that processes I developed earlier in my career continue to be used today, as well as having built an HR department from the ground up for a growing organization. My education, professional certifications, and continued commitment to learning have helped shape my career, but I also value the opportunity to share my journey and encourage others to pursue their own goals. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my dog, visiting the beach, and being outdoors, which allows me to recharge and maintain a healthy perspective.
