Ten minutes with Erica
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to getting involved and making the most of every opportunity. From taking on leadership roles at my university to pursuing new challenges throughout my career, I learned early on the importance of being proactive and creating opportunities for yourself. Those experiences helped open the door to my dream job after graduation, and I have carried that same mindset into every role since. I believe successcomes from showing up consistently, building strong relationships, and approaching every opportunity with a willingness to learn. By staying committed to growth and delivering my best work, I have been fortunate to advance through seven promotions within my company and build a career I am truly passionate about.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Slow down to speed up. A leader within my organization shared this with me early in my career, and it has stayed a valuable reminder throughout my journey. In fast-paced environments, there is often pressure to immediatelyreact and find a solution, but taking a moment to pause, understand the situation, and think strategically can lead to stronger decisions. This mindset has shaped the way I approach problem-solving and leadership by reminding me that thoughtful action is often more impactful than simply moving quickly.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
For young women considering a career in the cruise industry, my biggest piece of advice is to gain onboard experience early in your career and be prepared to work hard. Life at sea is incredibly unique—cruise ships operate 365 days a year, and contracts can last four to six months with no days off. It requires dedication, resilience, and a strong work ethic, so entering the industry with the right mindset is essential. While the opportunity to travel the world is certainly a remarkable benefit, the true value lies in the experience you gain. Working onboard provides a deep understanding of ship operations, guest expectations, and the complexities of delivering exceptional service in a dynamic environment. For those who aspire to long-term careers in the industry, that firsthand experience can be invaluable and often serves as a strong foundation for future shoreside leadership opportunities. Most importantly, don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone—some of the greatest personal and professional growth comes from embracing challenges and opportunities that initially seem daunting.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest opportunities in the cruise industry right now is its continued growth. The industry is welcoming new generations of travelers, expanding into emerging markets such as Asia, and continuing to innovate the way people experience cruising. With that growth, however, come challenges. Many popular destinations, particularly in Europe, are implementing capacity limits and new regulations to help manage tourism and protect local communities. As an industry, we are working closely with local governments and port authorities to support sustainable growth while continuing to deliver exceptional guest experiences.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Gratitude, accountability, and adaptability are three values that guide both my professional and personal life. Gratitude keeps me grounded and reminds me to appreciate the people, opportunities, and experiences that contribute to success, while accountability ensures I take ownership of my commitments and consistently follow through with integrity. Adaptability has been especially important throughout my career, allowing me to navigate change, embrace new challenges, and remain focused on solutions rather than obstacles. Together, these values have helped me grow personally and professionally, and they continue to influence the way I strive to make a positive impact on those around me.
