Her Story

About Erika

Erika Allen is an Audio-Video Technology and Film Teacher at Tucker High School in DeKalb County, Georgia, a position she has held since 2014. Beyond the classroom, she serves as the school's SkillsUSA advisor, coordinates the eSports program following its recognition as an official GHSA high school sport, and acts as digital agent for the district. She also leads student athletics as head coach for both girls' track and field and cross country, bringing the same dedication to her coaching that she applies to her teaching career.

A graduate of the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia, Allen built her academic foundation in broadcast journalism before earning her Master of Arts in Mass Communication and Media Studies from Georgia State University. She is currently completing a Specialist Degree in Instructional Technology at Kennesaw State University, set to finish in December 2026, as she works toward taking on greater leadership responsibilities in instructional technology and broadcasting, whether within education or in a corporate setting.

Allen's contributions to education were formally recognized when she received the Fox 5 High Five Teacher of the Year award in April 2026, and she has since been selected to be featured as an Influential Woman representing Lithonia, Georgia. She credits much of her drive to the work ethic instilled in her by her parents, and she remains deeply guided by the values of family, community, and giving back — principles she carries into her mentorship of students both in the classroom and on the field.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Erika

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the way my parents raised me, especially as the oldest child. They instilled in me the value of hard work and taught me never to give up on the things I want or dream of achieving. That foundation has carried me throughout my career, and I've always made it a point to put my best foot forward in everything I do.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I've received is that you will naturally end up where you're meant to be, without having to fight excessively for it. If you accept where you are in the moment and simply do your best, the right opportunities will come to you. Looking back, my biggest promotions and roles arrived when I focused on doing my best rather than forcing outcomes.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I encourage young women entering this field to embrace wearing multiple hats and taking on different roles, as it naturally helps you stand out. Don't feel confined to just one path — the more you're willing to take on, the more it shows how capable and resilient women truly are. Never be afraid to shine, and let whatever gift or talent you have take center stage.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Once I complete my specialist degree, I plan to pursue leadership roles in instructional technology or mass communication. Serving on a panel at a symposium was eye-opening for me and pushed me to think about advancing further into leadership within instructional technology and broadcasting. This path doesn't have to stay within education — it could extend into the corporate world, and I remain open to exploring those options.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Family and community are at the core of everything I value, both personally and professionally. Family is truly my backbone — I'm a new mom, and my daughter means everything to me. Beyond that, giving back in any way possible is essential to me, which is part of why coaching means so much; it's one of the most meaningful ways I can make an impact.
