Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to persistence, discipline, and the ability to balance competing responsibilities with determination. One of my most significant professional achievements was earning my MBA while working full-time and raising my daughter. That experience strengthened my resilience, time management skills, and commitment to personal and professional growth.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I ever received came from my most recent mentor, who retired last year. He told me that the number one thing in your life is to take care of yourself. I think I kind of took that to heart, because I do have a hard time not giving 100% of myself to what I'm doing. But it makes you a better person, and it makes you better at your job, because you are taking that time to kind of reflect on yourself and taking those moments and keeping yourself healthy - mentally and physically. To this day, he still checks in with me to make sure I'm still biking, still kickboxing, not overdoing it, and taking those mental health days if I need them. I think so many people are afraid to do that because they're just so involved with their position, but I will say that you can definitely do both and take care of yourself, and it makes you a better person and employee for that. You have to get to that point where you realize that at the end of the day, the business is not going to stop because you can't make it in. If you're going in and doing your job and doing it well, then you should be able to take those days off and there'd be no hiccups. It does take a while to get there, but you have to find that balance.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I think some of the biggest challenges are in recruitment and retention. The job market isn't what it was when I first started in HR, so it's coming up with different ideas to kind of draw people in, and then to also retain them. At Crypton, we do have very low turnover, so we've been lucky in that regard, but we also have a lot of programs that are employee-focused to kind of draw those people in. There's still those challenges of finding the right people. We don't like to just bring in bodies - we like to actually make them part of the team. Besides that, the only other thing would be, especially in my role, because I'm in Michigan and the facilities are in North Carolina, so it's just communication and how that looks and making sure that everyone's kind of on the same page when we do any changes or anything like that.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Credibility is really important to me. I like that people can know that I do what I say, and I follow up with people, and if I can't do something, I let people know. I'm very upfront with that. One of my problems that I do have is over-promising and giving too much of myself. I work full-time, I'm going to law school, and I travel once a month for work, so it's a lot and it's a strain. But all the employees know me by name. When I go down there, I walk the floor and I talk to them. I feel like we have genuine respect for each other, and for me, that's the most important thing - just making sure that my employees feel comfortable coming to me and don't look at me as someone that's not going to listen to them or not going to follow up with them.
