Her Story

About Eryn

My journey in public health began as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ghana, where I worked in community-based public health. I was really inspired and motivated by the work I was doing in that community, and it set the foundation for my career. Coming back to the United States, I continued my professional growth in public health across a variety of different roles and organizations. For the past 4 years, I've been at NACCHO, and I'm really drawn to the work with local health departments across the United States. Being a part of that important public health work is what has drawn me to the organization, and I find the work so meaningful. I've achieved several professional milestones I'm proud of, including passing two project management certifications and completing graduate school, all of which have contributed to my professional growth. In my day-to-day role, I focus on project management tasks, particularly around NACCHO's two major conferences - the Preparedness Summit in the spring and NACCHO 360 in July. I work with teammates and external partners to plan and coordinate all the important aspects that go into making these events successful. What I love most is streamlining systems and working through processes to make things run smoother, and contributing to overall team goals is something I'm really proud of.

Ten minutes with Eryn

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

The biggest thing that has kept me in the nonprofit space for most of my career has been the people who work at nonprofits. The people in this space are very, very motivated and really work towards improving whatever the problem is or the area they work on, and I find that really inspiring. I feel like the work is very inspiring, and I love being a part of the organization or the teams that contribute to that great work. There are always opportunities to think creatively, think outside of the box, and connect with colleagues and other people in the space to learn and grow from them. I think those are all great opportunities.

02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Things happen unexpectedly, so you have to have flexibility in the role and be able to pivot for last-minute changes. You also need to be creative in the way you think through solutions. There are always opportunities to think creatively, think outside of the box, and connect with colleagues and other people in the space to learn and grow from them.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I really appreciate open communication, transparency, honesty, and hard work. I think those are things that, luckily, all my coworkers have and the people I work with, and things that I like to uphold in the workplace as well.
