Her Interview
Ten minutes with Esther
01What do you attribute your success to?
My success comes from my mother and my dad. I'm the firstborn of a very large family, the first of 15 children. I became a single parent, and my mother and dad never gave up. They worked so hard to make sure we were okay. My work ethic, my view of life, patience and humility literally came from my parents.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Don't take things too seriously. Don't take yourself too seriously as a leader. When you're dealing with people, a lot of things will not always work out because you're dealing with human beings with challenges. Even if things go wrong, just have some goal not to take yourself too seriously. That helped me relax and guide people.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge is coming from a structured organization to business where there's no one to check on you or provide accountability. I have to depend on reading and reaching out to other women. Another challenge is working with women who are gifted but have not had leadership opportunities. As an immigrant, it takes time to gather finances due to competition.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The first one is humility. I uphold humility as a value that I think can get us a long way. If I'm not humble enough, then I stop planning. It has taken me through a lot of difficult situations because I can listen to other people. I also value patience because it has allowed us to work with many people. I also value courage, especially immigrating here and starting this company. Those three things are really my top values: humility, patience, and courage.
