About Ethel
Ethel Calhoun is a teaching artist, dancer, and fitness instructor based in New York City. With approximately 20 years in the artistic field and 12 to 15 years in mental health, she teaches dance classes throughout the city, including recent work at Steps on Broadway for a summer intensive and contracts through choreographer Camille Brown for community centers, schools, and events. Calhoun previously directed the Ailey Camp Miami Dance Camp for three years and served as a guidance counselor for Alvin Ailey camps in New York. Earlier in her career, she worked for eight years as a creative arts therapist at Bellevue Hospital, using arts as therapeutic tools with adolescents. She is an ACE Certified Personal Trainer who also teaches fitness classes and holds CPR certification from the American Red Cross. Calhoun earned her undergraduate degree from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania and a master's in Recreation Administration from New York University. She performs as a singer at Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem and participates in organizations including Ending Alzheimer's and Visiting Nursing Services, as well as church activities and community initiatives such as breast cancer runs and suicide support groups.
