Her Story
About Eva
I’m a veteran who has dedicated my life to serving others and using my voice to make a difference. Since 2008, I have worked as a public servant. In 2018, I wrote my book ‘Welcome to My People Garden’ and have also been published on GovLoop.com.
Around 2012, I began volunteering and started walking into my role as an advocate. God has been working on me, guiding me to see things I need to see and participate in. Over a year ago, I started a podcast and became a radio show host on two radio shows. I believe that if we don’t use our voices and share our stories, we contribute to the problem of the high veteran suicide rate of 22 a day. Last year, I wrote my first song, and I’m currently working on my PhD dissertation, which focuses on supporting all the women veterans who have served our country.
My long-term goal since 2009 has been to become a professor, and I’m nearing the point where I can retire from my current position and transition into that role. Additionally, I teach class called ‘Where’s My Mic? for Women" at Common Ground on the Hill in Westminster, Maryland. I do not do this for personal gain; there’s no ego involved. I do it out of love and compassion for my people garden because I genuinely believe that’s what we’re meant to help grow.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Eva
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to God. He pulls me together and guides me. I am not solely responsible for my achievements; I have my children who look up to me, and I have a supportive community around me. I am deeply humbled by the responsibility and role that God has entrusted to me—to have a voice and a platform. There is no ego in this; it is another way for me to serve my country. I do it out of love and compassion for my people. I genuinely believe that’s what we’re meant to help grow. God doesn’t give us more than we can handle. He sets the stage and assigns us tasks. I am simply submissive to His will. As I complete each task, He says, “Alright, now do this, now do this.” I am simply doing the work. I have numerous instances where I know I am in the right place at the right time because it is a divine assignment. Even when I feel frustrated and believe I am wasting my time, I am confident that I am in the right place at the right time.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Interview up! By that I mean do not be afraid to interview leaders in places where you want to go. Sometimes the door that you need to open is the one you knock on first. Do not wait for someone else to open your career door.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The most important values to me are love, compassion, faith, and hope. I believe we need to move away from being transactional in society and focus on growing genuine relationships. I do my best to help sow the seeds of love and faith and hope and be charitable, though it's not always received well. I don't do my work for ego or personal gain - I do it out of love and compassion for my people garden. I believe that if we're sowing seeds of deceit, we're part of the problem, so I try to sow seeds of love instead. I'm very humble about the responsibility and role that God has given me to have a voice and platform. I want to make sure I use that voice to help other women veterans and be part of the solution, not the problem. If we don't share our stories and use our voices, we can't help reduce the veteran suicide rate of 22 a day.
