Dr. Evannie Martinez, DVM, is a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and the owner of Poppy Vet Animal Wellness Center in Teaneck, New Jersey. With more than two decades of experience in veterinary medicine, she has dedicated her career to providing compassionate, high-quality care for animals while continually expanding her professional expertise. A graduate of veterinary medicine school in the Dominican Republic in 2003, Dr. Martinez relocated to the United States to further her education and career, gaining extensive experience in general practice, urgent and emergency care, and veterinary hospital management. Today, she leads her own practice, delivering comprehensive healthcare services primarily for dogs and cats while remaining committed to advancing patient care through ongoing professional development.
Throughout her career, Dr. Martinez has combined clinical excellence with a passion for lifelong learning and service. She is a licensed veterinarian in the State of New Jersey, a USDA APHIS Accredited Veterinarian, and a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). She is also pursuing certification in canine rehabilitation to further broaden the services available to her patients. In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Martinez has participated in numerous low-cost spay and neuter programs and international veterinary outreach initiatives, reflecting her dedication to improving animal welfare and increasing access to quality veterinary care in underserved communities.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to hard work and a continuous desire to grow. I firmly believe that dedication is the foundation of achievement—if you are willing to work hard, opportunities will follow. Equally important is maintaining the mindset of always striving to improve. I am committed to lifelong learning, developing my skills, and becoming a better veterinarian so I can provide the highest level of care to my patients and their families.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
One of the most valuable lessons I've learned is to maintain a constant thirst for knowledge. There are countless opportunities and resources available to help us grow, but they only make a difference if we are genuinely willing to learn. Continuous education, curiosity, and a commitment to self-improvement are essential for both personal and professional success. The desire to keep learning is what opens new doors throughout a career.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would encourage young women to learn how to prioritize. There is a time for learning, a time for building your career, a time for family, and a time to enjoy life. Veterinary medicine is incredibly rewarding, but it is also demanding, so understanding how to balance your responsibilities is essential. By setting priorities and managing your time wisely, you can build a successful career while maintaining a healthy and fulfilling personal life.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the greatest challenges facing women in veterinary medicine is balancing the many expectations placed upon them. Society often expects women to excel simultaneously as professionals, caregivers, mothers, and providers, and meeting all of those responsibilities can be overwhelming. Veterinary medicine is a highly demanding profession that requires significant time, dedication, and emotional commitment. Successfully balancing family life with professional responsibilities remains one of the industry's greatest challenges, making effective prioritization and strong support systems more important than ever.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that guide both my professional and personal life are transparency, efficiency, and responsibility. I believe in being honest and open with clients, making thoughtful and efficient decisions that benefit both patients and their families, and taking full responsibility for the care I provide. These principles help build trust, strengthen relationships, and ensure that I consistently deliver compassionate, high-quality veterinary care.
