Her Story
About Evelyn
I was a stay-at-home mom spending my days cleaning, taking care of the kids, and preparing meals. One day, I realized I needed to do something more, to learn something so I could help people too. About 12 years ago, I decided to register for college, choosing something near home so I could still be close to my family, cook, and have everything ready. I started with my bachelor's degree in marketing from DeVry University. As soon as I finished, I registered to do my master's in Marketing Management at Keller School of Management, and then I also went ahead and did Human Resources Management. Through all of this, I was working for non-profit organizations and the City of New York, and I liked it so much that I have been doing it for a few years. Now I spend most of my day advising clients on how to start a business, how to do marketing, how to grow their businesses through funding, government contracting, and other resources. I do hands-on guidance, helping clients with different things they don't know how to do, guiding them specifically so they can complete all the steps efficiently and run their business as they wish. I also spend time preparing for business events, meeting other entrepreneurs and professionals that can align with the expertise I offer so I can provide support as well.

Ten minutes with Evelyn
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to persistence. I never had my parents having an education, but I wanted to do it for me and for my kids. It was not easy. I faced a lot of challenges, like a mother with cancer, a divorce, and all that, but I was persistent, and I said I have to do this, because I need to show myself that I can do it, and I can be also an example to others and my children as well.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've ever received is: Never give up. It's going to be hard, but you need to keep trying.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Oh my god, just go ahead and do it. You have a lot of support. A lot of support. And you are going to find people that are going to be willing to help you.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The opportunities are that there are many venues we can take when you become an entrepreneur or go into a career in business. The challenges are that we have a lot of competition, so we need to prepare and learn a little something more so we can actually compete.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me in my work are getting feedback and seeing the growth of the clients. That's the value that I see, when I see them growing and expanding. In my personal life, it's me being a mentor for an organization like Association of Latino Professionals, and using my knowledge and the expertise that I gained in school to teach other young professionals to come into this life that was so unknown, and be able to coach and guide them.
