About Evelyn Reátegui-

Evelyn Zirena serves as an environmental toxicologist at the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality in Austin, Texas, a role she has held for three years. She brings ten years of professional experience in the field since completing her PhD in environmental toxicology at Texas Tech University in 2016, following a master's degree from Troy University and an undergraduate biology degree earned in Peru. Her work focuses on evaluating air quality and groundwater contamination data, with a particular strength in translating complex technical findings into accessible risk communication for stakeholders and the public. Evelyn is a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology, certified since 2021, and a certified ecologist through the Ecological Society of America. She maintains active memberships in the Society of Toxicology, the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, and the Ecological Society of America. Beyond her agency role, she founded the Science Education for All initiative to bring scientific experiences to communities in Peru and mentors young women through programs with Women in STEM and the Society of Toxicology. Evelyn attributes her success to consistent hard work, her supportive family including her husband and children, and a strong network of friends and colleagues.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Evelyn Reátegui-

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my family, friends, and support system who back me up every day. My mom, sisters, husband, and kids support me 100 percent even without a village here in the US. That human connection keeps me going along with consistent hard work.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Look for opportunities yourself because they will not find you. Reach out to people, email hundreds if needed, network on LinkedIn, and find fully funded programs. You only need one good offer for grad school or a job.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Hard work and consistency are key, along with honesty, open communication, and transparency in all relationships whether at work or home. As a Hispanic woman I push to show up early, leave late, and deliver faster than others.
