Her Story

About Faith

My day always starts with going through what is the founder's schedule, what is our schedule, what we have to follow up on, and what her priority is right now this week. Elaine Bennett, the founder, has a lot on her plate and always needs help keeping on track of appointments and staying on time, so I'm there as a reminder. My role really is to assist her on her projects for the nonprofit and to give her fresh ideas and a different point of view. For example, I suggested reaching out to DC Instagram influencers who are mom influencers with children in the DC schools district to see if they wanted to collaborate or be donors - that's a whole other world she wasn't used to because she's used to going to fundraiser parties and networking that way. We have staff meetings at our DC office once a week, and after that, a follow-up Zoom call. I'm the main middleman for everybody to speak through and make sure messages get across directly and concisely. We have a very age-diverse and nationality-diverse team, so sometimes words can be misunderstood, and I've adapted skills to navigate different personalities, nationalities, and age groups. I also have a background in classical music, which helps me understand the technical terms our musical producer uses. I like to think of myself not only as being her taskmaster, but always trying to keep everything simple for her, because as a leader that manages so many things at once, it can get very stressful. I don't go to an office all the time - I call her every morning and say, hey, where do you need me to meet you? Sometimes I meet her at her house to work out of her office, or I go to the office and she'll meet me there, but I always have to be ready to adapt and meet her needs.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I think I would say to fully thrive in a space like this, especially a space that has a very diverse group of nationalities and a very diverse age group, it's always to be open to accepting fatigue, being open to learning, being open to advice, and to never be afraid to ask questions. Everyone on the team has a different role, and they are an expert in that role, so no one is expected to be an expert in everything. So if you have a question about something that's outside of your role, there should be no shame in asking. Even me just asking for help from Mrs. Bennett, I just said I needed an idea as to where I should go, because I always looked up to her. She's a great example of a woman running a different bunch of things at once, and she still thrives at it. I needed an answer from her expertise, and she had an answer. But also, I would tell that young woman, you're never stuck in one lane. There are so many different things you could do. I never thought I would be in the nonprofit industry - I just never saw that projection for me from college. I thought I'd be in fashion forever, but fashion wasn't making me happy, it was just sales. This is so much more than that. So much bigger than me.
