Her Story
About Fay
Fay Coad serves as a Project Manager at Ameresco in San Francisco, California, supervising four construction managers in the company's solar division. Her work focuses on commercial solar design, development, and installation, drawing on her background as an electrical engineer with expertise in power engineering and construction management. She graduated from college in 1985 with a double major and began her engineering career that year, spending 12 years at Sony Music developing audio devices before taking time off to raise her children. Upon returning to the workforce, she obtained her California Board of Licensing in solar contracting after dedicated study and now applies her power engineering foundation to the solar sector, where she has worked for 17 years across various companies. Coad attributes her professional success to the support of her father, who encouraged her to see herself as equal to two men, and her college physics professor, who helped her overcome shyness and build mental strength in a male-dominated classroom. She is passionate about mentoring others in the field and advises young women entering engineering to pursue it only if they genuinely love and are curious about the work rather than seeking to impress others.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Fay
01What do you attribute your success to?
My success I attribute to my father and my physics professor in college. My father told me I was equal to two males and that stayed in my head giving me the push. My physics teacher pushed me through difficulties when I was the only girl in class and too shy to ask questions, teaching me to use my mental strength and go through the battle without regressing.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
The number one thing is to ask yourself if you are entering this field because you love it and are curious about it and want to learn, or are you doing this just to impress friends, family and parents. I learned from my friend's daughter Vanessa who went to Stanford for engineering to impress her mom but hated the job after one year and switched to library science. Even if inspired by someone, make sure you are really curious and love the field.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The greatest challenge is keeping up with the load of work and continuing to develop yourself in parallel. When given a task like designing an amplifier, learn every bit of information you can about it on the side. Rise above the design because it opens more doors when your knowledge is broader.
