Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the people that I come in contact with on a daily basis. Every interaction is an opportunity to coach, to consult, and solve problems. It just pushes me to be a better version of me, and it keeps me from being stagnant. So I would say I attribute that to the people that I come in contact with on a daily basis, whether it's someone in the community, an attorney, a real estate investor, the business next door, you know, just a community of people who come to me for whatever their need may be, and it just challenges me to be better than the person I was yesterday. That's what I attribute my success to.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I ever received came from my dad when I was in junior high school. He always told me it's okay to work for someone, but strive to have something of your own. My dad worked for Union Carbide, which became a subsidiary of Dow Chemical Corporation, and he held the same job for 33 years. I told him if I stay on a job for 33 days, I'm doing good. But that talk that I had with him when I was in junior high school has pretty much shaped my career. It taught me to pursue entrepreneurial ventures where I have more options and don't have to be stuck in a box.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

The best advice I could give is to take a chance on yourself. In life, we take chances on so many things. We take chances on people, places, things, but the one thing that we overlook is ourselves. We're fearful. Well, what if I get it wrong? There's nothing wrong with getting it wrong. Falling or failing, there's nothing wrong with that. That just means you're closer to success. So I would say think outside the box, don't let anyone put you in a box, don't put yourself in a box, and just reach for more. And again, just take a chance on yourself. It's okay to not know everything. You'll learn on the fly, on the cuff, as you progress in your pursuits. I also coach women on thinking outside of the box and looking at non-traditional roles, non-traditional sectors that women generally don't pursue.
