Her Story
About Felicia
My goal in life was to go to the military and be an Air Force nurse, but life kind of transitioned my career when my father passed away and I was left with a lot of responsibility. I had to quickly figure it out, so I took an entry-level accounting position. With that position, I worked my way up by doing every position in that department and ultimately got all the experience for all of those positions, and that's how I ended up in management. I manage all of accounts receivable, which means from day to day I'm managing claim collections, cash applications, SOPs, organizing, and having meetings with operations to streamline processes and address any hiccups or lack of training. Basically, anything and everything to make our departments run smoothly, incorporating team conversations where we're working more together than against each department so that certain processes can be streamlined. My most notable professional achievement is passing on leadership skills. I don't hold information, so whatever I learn, I teach, so that my team can also take those skills and grow. I have worked my way up from the bottom to my current level by doing all of those jobs that I manage. I tell people a lot, too, you always have to be learning, and you always have to be open to learning.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Don't be afraid of the unknown. Sometimes the thing you fear is the thing you need for your growth. Sometimes you have to overcome your fear by just jumping in. I use an experience I've had before - I've skydived - and the thing that I use to explain it is that sometimes you have to jump. I'm not going to tell everyone to go skydiving, that's not everyone's thing, but sometimes the very thing you fear is the thing you need for your growth. When there are things that I am afraid of, I jump in. I was definitely afraid when I skydived, but I did it anyway.
