Her Interview
Ten minutes with Felicia
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to watching my single mother who worked three jobs to provide for me and never quit, even when tired. She made sure I had family around me and wouldn't let me dwell on failures but taught me to pick myself back up. This built my drive to always strive to do my best and be a trustworthy person who does what they say.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I ever received was to figure out what I love to do and create a job that doesn't feel like work. At first I didn't listen and chose a job for the money since I'm a numbers person, but now I realize I should have been in a people-oriented role where I can use my voice to inspire and help others.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Make sure accounting and finance is what you really want to do, not just because there's good money in it. Be sure it's the field you want because it's not all glitz and glam. When studying, learn as much as you can since you have to come with an understanding; you can't just fake your way through it because people will know.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Challenges include that finance is an ever-changing world with shifting reporting and how people view finances, plus many people aren't honest. Opportunities are that if you prove yourself you can climb the ladder to CFO or even president of corporations, go out on your own to create your own business, and accounting serves as a springboard to many other jobs like analyst or campaign finance.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Family is everything to me. Honesty, being driven, standing by what I believe in, loving God as a Christian, hard work, and helping people up without looking down on them are key. I believe in doing what I say so people never doubt me, and I'd rather do too much for others than too little.
