About Gabriela

Gabbi Birkner serves as Executive Director at Michigan House Senior Living, a role she has held for seven years following nearly 20 years in the senior living field. She began her career in human resources at a facility near her high school and advanced when owners of a new building took a chance on her despite her lack of prior executive director experience. Her expertise lies in policies and procedures, which she considers her niche, and she is skilled at using her resources to guide families and vendors through the complexities of senior care options. Gabbi holds a bachelor's degree in administration and values hands-on learning, which has been supplemented by certifications and mentorship from her employers. She is a member of HCAM and Mala, and recently co-founded the Park P-A-R-C non-profit to sponsor senior pets rescued from shelters for adoption by seniors, providing ongoing support including medical care, food delivery, and end-of-life services. Gabbi attributes her success to the opportunity that demonstrated her capabilities beyond her initial beliefs, fueling her daily drive to learn and embrace new challenges.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Gabriela

01What do you attribute your success to?

Being given the opportunity showed me I was capable of more than I believed. It sparked that I can learn and do things out of my comfort zone. I wake up every day wanting to learn more and not look back saying I didn't try.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Be honest. Make sure you're always honest, even if someone doesn't like what you said, as long as you're being honest.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Follow your gut. You have to take the leap and believe in yourself. You can't wait for someone to hand you an opportunity.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Money. It's a very expensive industry to pay for good care and reliable staff, especially with private pay and people waiting until incidents happen.
