Her Story

About Gabriela

I'm originally from Panama, where I won a scholarship from the President to study in the U.S. after participating in a huge public speaking competition. I studied international business and data analytics at Illinois State University, and the support and opportunities that the institution offered me were incredible. A lot of the professors literally shaped and motivated me to be where I am today, especially as an international student where at first everything was really unfamiliar for me. My leadership skills and opportunities have allowed me to be in spaces like government affairs for multinational corporations. I have worked in the communication, government, public affairs, and marketing industries. I worked for the newsletter at Illinois State University writing stories and gathering information. Then I worked at a multinational corporation called Liberty Latin America, which has a presence in the Caribbean, Latin America, and North America, where I was reviewing policies, taking notes, and going to meetings with ministers. Currently, I work at the Organization of American States as a communication and public affairs intern in the Human Resources Employment and Education Department. I do a lot of data analytics, working with the 33 member states that need reports on data. I also do a lot of writing, creating reports, analyzing data, negotiations with universities, and going to meetings.

Ten minutes with Gabriela

01What do you attribute your success to?

I feel like my journey began being shaped in Panama, where I'm originally from. I got a scholarship because I participated in a huge public speaking competition, and the president gave me a scholarship to study in the U.S. Then I studied at Illinois State University, and the support and all the opportunities that the institution offered to me was incredible. I feel like a lot of the professors literally shaped and motivated me to be where I am today, especially by being an international student, where at first everything was really unfamiliar for me. So yeah, I feel like that was my main support, and my family as well.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

What is good is not easy, and what is easy is not good. That has been something really important, especially in the field I am. Sometimes, you know, the good things and the amazing things take time. Never stop insisting and persisting.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I feel like the opportunity to transform other people's lives is what inspired me. I was motivated when I was young to raise my voice and be part of these meaningful things that can improve everybody's life. Where I am right now, it allows me to do that. I'm an advocate for education - I founded a nonprofit in 2020 in Panama called Leadership Panama, and the main cause of that was improving education, to give young people the necessary tools that they need to advance. We found some gaps in the education system that we were trying to fill.
