Her Story

About Gabriella

Gabriella Borges is a supply chain and sourcing professional with two years of experience. She most recently served as Sourcing Manager at Dow Chemical in Midland, Michigan, where she managed the company's ocean shipping portfolio for US exports. In this role, she negotiated with ocean carriers on capacity and rates, handled bids, awarded volumes, and maintained both carrier and internal stakeholder relationships to meet business needs. Earlier, she joined a supply chain rotation program at Dow after studying industrial engineering. Her first rotation was as a logistics specialist, where she built dashboards, analyzed forecasts for truck logistics, and focused on the data analysis aspects of supply chain operations. She was promoted to sourcing manager after completing one year in the program rather than continuing to a second rotation. She recently moved to Carmel, Indiana, and is currently in transition, seeking opportunities in supply chain, logistics, data analysis, or process improvement.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Early in my career, what made me more successful than my peers was showing up and going to the office in person. I know that it's great to have flexibility with the hybrid schedule, but I think showing up when nobody else is there says a lot about you. When you're young in your career, you don't have kids to take care of, so just put in that extra little effort.

02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

With logistics, especially ocean shipping, one of the bigger challenges is that anything can happen at any moment. Like the Middle East war broke out, the Strait of Hormuz is down, oil prices go up. You just have to be able to pivot so quickly. The experts in the field sometimes don't really know what to do, so it's important to know and learn how to pivot and not be scared of that.
