Her Story

About Gabrielle

I've always worked in client-facing roles in my younger years, and when I was able to work my way up to management roles, I really just enjoyed it so much more. I enjoy making it a great place to come to work every day and showing that hard work can pay off within an organization. Customers/clients are everything, but if you don't have the people on the inside of the organization happy, then you don't have an organization to serve your clients and customers from. I've just loved the inside of it. I got my bachelor's degree from Michigan State in 2019, and wasn't able to find a job right out of college just because of COVID and everything - the world shut down. I went into a banking position at Rocket, and I knew I wanted to get back to the HR side, so I did that for two and a half years at Rocket. My time at Rocket was probably the most helpful because it let me narrow down what I truly enjoy for HR. When I was a banker, they wanted to get a small group of people to work on culture activities and do events, and that was almost like a reminder to me of how I really miss the people aspect of organizations. I transitioned from doing culture events to banking, and then getting an official HR role as a background analyst, continuing doing the culture and engagement work. I received a Mission to Excellence Award one quarter, for working through culture engagement concerns on a brand new team that had gone through a bunch of downsizing before I joined. Things were just not in the happiest of places, so being a part of bringing some of the joy back to the office was probably my proudest achievement so far in the corporate world. My husband and I started our own lawn care business four years ago. He does a lot of the actual hands-on work for our clients, and I'm more behind the scenes doing the office work, social media, all of those kinds of things - we kind of divide and conquer. I do all of our billing, handle all of our client requests or concerns, quotes, contracts, and any follow-up that needs to be done. I work on social media for upcoming posts to grow engagement. I'm currently working on my master's degree and my main area of expertise is culture and engagement.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received is that the worst thing that you can ever get told is no. So it's okay to ask the question or pitch yourself for something, because the worst thing that you're ever gonna get told is no, and you don't want to live in a spot of wondering, like, what if I applied for the job, or what if I brought up my idea? That's been a really big thing for me.
