Her Story

About Gauri

I work as a Manager in the Business Process Control Stream at Deloitte's Risk Advisory division, where I've been in the industry for 7 years. I'm specifically focused on IT audit fieldwork, and my role involves spearheading 4 to 5 premium projects at Deloitte. My primary responsibility is to lead teams of audit and assurance professionals to help clients and service organizations establish strong internal audit and cybersecurity frameworks, ensuring they have clear and straightforward reports when audited by external auditors. I started my career journey with an engineering degree in telecommunications back in India, and my very first job was with Deloitte India as a senior analyst in the risk and financial advisory team. Even at that junior position, I was fortunate to have the responsibility of leading a team, performing controls testing, and ensuring cybersecurity frameworks were in compliance with industry standards. This experience developed my interest in cybersecurity and audit, which led me to pursue my master's degree at the University at Buffalo in IT Audit specialization. After completing my master's, I joined Deloitte's US firm in the internal audit team. What inspired me to pursue this field is the massive boom of data we've experienced in the past decade. Trillions and billions of data points are generated every single second, and all this data is highly confidential for firms and needs protection. Even the slightest breach can cause severe repercussions and reputation damage to big organizations, which is why I realized cybersecurity is going to stay as long as Earth prospers. I'm also a holder of the CISA certification (Certified Information Systems Auditor), a globally renowned certification conducted by ISACA that provides a holistic perspective of the domain. My goal is to climb through the leadership ladder to reach a directorial position where I can have a say in growing solutions, drafting them, implementing them, and bringing creative ideas to the industry to create original impact and see real changes happen.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My one single advice would be just let your curiosity flow, and let not the emotional barrier stop you from reaching out to someone, finding opportunities, thinking that you're not capable of doing something, because we inherently are capable of doing things beyond our own imagination and limits. It's all about finding the right opportunities and connecting with the right people, and then gender and everything just takes a step back. Even though we as women have other external responsibilities, we can actually thrive through and ensure that we can draw our own path to success. Finding that right fit for you at the right time is really important, because else you'll find yourself stuck in a position where it's too late to make that jump, or you're just too emotionally invested in a specific team, and then it just gets difficult to shift to things which you actually want to do.
