Her Story

About Gay

Gay Lynn Hill is an accomplished Project, Program, and Portfolio Manager with 27 years of professional experience spanning project management, staffing, software, legal services, and pharmaceutical industries. She began her career in payroll at a staffing firm before advancing to a staffing specialist role. Her career then transitioned into project management while she was working as a Training Specialist for a legal software company, where she spent 17 years developing expertise in software implementation, training, process improvement, and project delivery. She later continued her career with a local law firm before transitioning into the pharmaceutical industry, where she further expanded her project and program management experience.

Hill is a dedicated leader and advocate for the project management profession. She earned her bachelor’s degree and holds the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, along with six Agile certifications that reflect her commitment to continuous professional development. Her leadership within the Project Management Institute (PMI) has been particularly notable. She volunteered with the Indianapolis chapter, serving as Director of Volunteers, Vice President of Professional Development, and ultimately President of a chapter representing approximately 1,500 members. Through these roles, she has strengthened her skills in leadership, mentoring, professional development, volunteer engagement, and organizational strategy while helping advance the project management profession within her community.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Hill is passionate about mentorship, education, and community service. She volunteers as a Marion County Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) and shares her project management knowledge with elementary school students, helping introduce young people to valuable skills such as organization, planning, teamwork, and leadership. She attributes her success to determination, perseverance, and the support of exceptional mentors who provided guidance and encouragement throughout her career. Her commitment to developing others and giving back reflects a leadership philosophy grounded in service, continuous learning, and empowering others to reach their potential.

Ten minutes with Gay

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to determination, continuous learning, and the support of great mentors who took me under their wing, shared their knowledge, and provided valuable guidance that helped steer me in the right direction. I have never been afraid to ask for mentorship, seek advice, or speak up when I need support or have something meaningful to contribute. I believe being willing to learn from others, advocate for myself, and remain persistent through challenges has been instrumental to my growth and success.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received is to never limit myself. If there is something I want to accomplish, I believe in finding a way to make it happen and refusing to give up when challenges arise. I approach obstacles as opportunities to find creative solutions, whether that means going around, over, or through the barriers in my path. Persistence, determination, and a willingness to keep moving forward have been essential to my professional growth.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the project management industry is to continue investing in your education and never stop learning. The field is constantly evolving, so staying curious, building new skills, and remaining open to new opportunities are essential for long-term success. I also encourage women to seek the best path forward, be adaptable when circumstances change, and think intentionally about their future goals. Most importantly, believe in your abilities, remain prepared for change, and never stop pursuing opportunities for growth.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in project management today is remaining flexible and avoiding becoming too committed to a single methodology. Every client and project has unique needs, so successful project leaders must be willing to adapt their approach and focus on delivering the best possible outcomes. At the same time, there are tremendous opportunities in the growing areas of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and technology transformation. These emerging fields require project managers to continuously learn, prioritize competing demands, and effectively balance multiple initiatives while remaining focused on client needs and organizational goals.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are honesty, transparency, and direct communication. I believe in being truthful and straightforward with others, even when the conversation may be difficult or uncomfortable. While I always strive to communicate with professionalism and respect, I prefer open and honest conversations rather than sugarcoating situations or leaving people to make assumptions. Clear communication builds trust, strengthens relationships, and helps everyone move forward with a shared understanding.
