Her Story

About Genesis

I have been in my field for about the last 7 years. Originally a painter, I found myself wanting to curate experiences like art-based skill programs and opportunities to cultivate joy. Growing up with parents who constantly hosted events, I naturally gravitated toward hosting in creative spaces, starting with weddings and art auctions that grew into more. Currently, I contract with a production company in DC planning a citywide art show in a 20-story building dedicated to artists. My typical day involves writing copy, calls with contractors and artists, drafting contracts, and on-site meetings.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Genesis

01What do you attribute your success to?

Definitely my kids. It is super easy to feel self-motivated, but when you have other people depending on you, the motivation takes it into overdrive. Post-children, I seek out opportunities much more fervently. I also want to be the best version of myself so they know they can do anything.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

From renowned artist Mark Bradford early in my career: 'you either do or you don't. There is no choice.' That changed my life.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't be afraid to work your way up. There are some things you won't understand if you come straight into a managed or supervisory role. Have humility and understand what it means to advocate for the people you're serving. Certain logistics you won't understand if you're not starting on the ground.
