Her Story

About Genevieve

After college I was hired by Upjohn Michigan as a pharmaceutical representative for 6 years. Then after having my second child in 1998 I went back to nursing as a critical care and emergency room nurse in Southern California. I owned my own staffing agency and was promoted to hospital administration in 2006. I climbed the ladder through hard work and grit to executive leadership positions overseeing operations in multiple states for Optum including Texas Florida Indiana and New Jersey. I currently hold an executive leadership position in a large healthcare system in Los Angeles while practicing as a family nurse practitioner seeing patients every Friday in Redondo Beach and running for Congress in California District 44.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Genevieve

01What do you attribute your success to?

My motivation is my family. Not for me. I consider it public service because if they don't have insurance I do take care of them and help them get their Medicaid.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

You have to be a lifelong learner. You cannot be a know-it-all. Because in healthcare in medicine treating people you would not know everything until you retire.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

They have to prioritize their health. Prioritize because your health is truly your wealth. If you don't have your health you won't be able to help others.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The access to healthcare and the unaffordability of healthcare. People losing their insurance because premiums are so high. Opportunities to reform healthcare really focus on value not fee for service and ensure continuum of care.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I value character. I value resilience. I value meritocracy.
